Survival in patients who develop symptomatic severe aortic stenosis

Survival in patients who develop symptomatic severe aortic stenosis
This graph demonstrates the survival of patients with untreated and treated calcific AS. Prior to the onset of symptoms, patients with calcific aortic valve disease are at risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality given associated comorbidities (eg, risk of coronary artery disease). Hence, mortality for patients with asymptomatic calcific AS is higher than for the general population. For patients with severe AS, the outlook dramatically worsens when symptoms develop (eg, dyspnea of cardiac origin, syncope, or angina pectoris) and untreated patients exhibit mortality rates that approach 50% in 2 years. In patients with symptomatic severe AS, SAVR or TAVI are associated with short-term procedural risk but provide improved longer-term survival.
SAVR: surgical aortic valve replacement; TAVI: transcatheter aortic valve implantation; AS: aortic stenosis.
