A doctor injects a blue dye, radioactive substance, or magnetic substance near the tumor.
If a blue dye is used, the sentinel lymph node turns blue. If a radioactive substance is used, the doctor uses a probe that detects radiation to find the sentinel lymph nodes. If a magnetic substance is used, the doctor uses a special magnetic probe to find them.
The doctor then removes the sentinel lymph node for testing.
