* In patients with early presentations of some diseases that usually cause significant illness, such as malrotation or congenital adrenal hyperplasia, appearance may be normal.
¶ These conditions typically present within the first one or two months of life.
Δ Not all patients with malignancy may have fever.
Poor feeding, pyloric stenosis or gastroenteritis are common conditions causing dehydration. In some patients, dehydration may be severe and cause ill appearance.
§ Conditions listed as causing critical illness may occasionally have less severe presentations.
