Reported Use

Postpartum: To produce uterine contractions during the third stage of labor to promote separation of the placenta and to control postpartum bleeding or hemorrhage

Dosage Range

Labor stimulation: IM: Ergometrine maleate 0.5 mg and oxytocin 5 units after delivery of anterior shoulder or immediately after full delivery

Postpartum hemorrhage:

IM (preferred): Ergometrine maleate 0.5 mg and oxytocin 5 units following placental expulsion or when bleeding occurs. If necessary, may repeat dose after ≥2 hours; Maximum: 3 doses (ergometrine 1.5 mg and oxytocin 15 units) in 24 hours

IV (emergency only): Ergometrine maleate 0.25 to 0.5 mg and oxytocin 2.5 to 5 units
