Histopathologic features of acral nevi

Histopathologic features of acral nevi

Histopathologic features of acral nevus of the junctional type. The cornified layer slants slightly.

(A) Nevus cells arranged in nests are predominantly located in the crista profunda limitans (arrows), and only a few melanocytes are detected in the crista profunda intermedia (asterisks) (hematoxylin and eosin stain).

(B) Melanin granules in the cornified layer are detected as parallel columns regularly situated under the surface furrows (arrows), whereas they are mostly absent in the cornified layer under the surface ridges (asterisks) (Fontana-Masson stain).
