This table shows which side effects are seen with different TCAs. Side effects are usually mild and can improve over a few weeks as your body gets used to the medicine. The more dots there are, the higher the risk of a side effect is:
No dots: None
1 dot (●): Slight
2 dots (●●): Low
3 dots (●●●): Moderate
4 dots (●●●●): High
Side effects happen less often with the lower doses used for pain.
Many of these medicines can affect your blood pressure and make you feel lightheaded when you stand up. This could increase your risk of falling. Older people might not be able to take TCAs, because side effects such as memory problems and confusion can be worse.
