FABER test (or Patrick test, "figure four" test)

FABER test (or Patrick test, "figure four" test)
The FABER (flexion-abduction-external rotation) test (or Patrick test, "figure four" test) consists of flexion of the hip, with abduction and external rotation of the hip. Force is applied down the bent knee and the opposite pelvis. In a patient with groin pain, reproduction of this pain is suggestive of underlying hip joint disease. In a patient with lateral hip pain, lateral pain will suggest GTPS. In a patient with buttock pain, a diagnosis of sacroiliac joint disease will be supported.
GTPS: greater trochanteric pain syndrome.
