Skin and eyes share a common embryological origin from the embryonic surface ectoderm. Ocular manifestations in dermatological diseases are common and have diagnostic value. At present, there are a limited number of comprehensive reviews emphasizing the ocular manifestations of dermatological diseases. More than 40 published articles about ocular findings in dermatology were reviewed.

Dermatology has a very distinctive lexicon. The term pityriasis refers to several dermatologic conditions which all feature scaling of the skin. According to the Merriam?Webster dictionary, the term pityriasis was first used in print in 1684. Although the diseases beginning with the name pityriasis are of diverse causation, they do represent important dermatologic diseases, with some common and others quite rare. It is important for dermatologists to be aware and updated on all pityriasis conditions in dermatology.

Follicular mucinosis (FM) is an epithelial reaction pattern characterized by follicular mucin accumulation. It has been described in association with various inflammatory and neoplastic cutaneous disorders. FM is generally divided into a primary benign idiopathic form and a secondary form usually occurring in association with cutaneous lymphomas (especially mycosis fungoides), among other entities. Distinction between the two forms can be challenging as they share many overlapping features and the lack of a single diagnostic tool to differentiate between the two. Making the distinction may require evaluating and correlating the clinical, histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular studies together. Long?term clinical follow?up also remains very important. In this review, we describe the different entities associated with FM, its pathogenesis, and possible therapeutic options.

Melasma, a common cause for seeking dermatologic care, is a chronic condition of skin hyperpigmentation. With a poorly understood pathogenesis, and no universal cure, melasma is a challenge for many dermatologists. For decades, there has been investigation into the role of oxidative stress in melasma. In this literature review, we introduce the role of oxidative stress in melasma and discuss the function of various topical and oral antioxidant therapies for patients suffering from melasma.

High rates of posttreatment discomfort, infection, recurrence, and increased time to return to work have been noted after nail plate avulsion resulting from epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor(EGFR?TKI)?induced paronychia, which may even interrupt the course of treatment for EGFR?TKI therapy. Thus, we conducted this study to determine how effectively a topical ??blocker, betaxolol, prevents EGFR?TKI?induced paronychia.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an allergic disease that affects individuals of various ages. Recently, the IL?4/13 inhibitor dupilumab has gained regulatory approval for clinical use in AD patients. Dupilumab has been reported to reduce several markers of AD, including the serum levels of thymus and activation?regulated chemokine (TARC/CCL17), blood lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and serum total immunoglobulin E (IgE).

In recent years, there has been an ongoing interest in topical treatment for lentigo maligna (LM) as imiquimod 5% cream owing to the localization of this tumor and the advanced age of patients; however, the efficacy of imiquimod 5% cream is controversial, and the rate of local relapses is about 25–53%. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a noninvasive diagnostic tool useful not only for diagnostic purpose but also for monitoring the response to the local treatment of LM. Our aim was to demonstrate the role of RCM in the follow?up of a topical treatment with imiquimod 5% cream in clinical practice.

Male genital lichen sclerosus (MGLSc) is a chronic inflammatory scarring dermatosis associated with penile carcinoma. The prepuce is pivotal in its etiology. Other proposed etiological factors are the subject of dispute and include occluded urinary exposure, autoimmunity, immunodysregulation, and infectious agents.

Targeted therapies and immunotherapies are increasingly prescribed, but classic chemotherapy agents are still highly used in cancer treatment. Both therapies, the old and the new, are associated with cutaneous adverse events (CAEs) that can cause treatment interruptions or reduce the quality of life of patients.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of hair follicles characterized by recurrent, painful nodules, abscesses, and sinus tracts (“tunnels”) typically refractory to treatment. This debilitating condition results in poor quality of life due to high disease burden. Intralesional triamcinolone (ILTAC) is a standard of care for acute inflammation and drainage associated with HS; however, the optimal therapeutic dose has not been determined. We investigated the utility of high?dose ILTAC 20 mg/ml (ILTAC?20) or 40 mg/ml (ILTAC?40), for inflammatory lesions of HS.

The pigmented skin of black Africans has been credited with reduction in risk of skin cancer. African albinos have inherited defects in skin melanin deposition, which predisposes them to ultraviolet radiation?induced cutaneous carcinogenesis. We compared the manifestation of skin cancers between albino and nonalbino Africans aiming to describe the effect of pigmentation or lack of it on the epidemiological characteristics of skin cancer in Africans.
