Electrogastrography (EGG) is a non-invasive method of measuring gastric electrophysiology. Abnormal gastric electrophysiology is thought to contribute to disease pathophysiology in patients with gastroduodenal symptoms but this has not been comprehensively quantified in pediatric populations. This study aimed to quantify the abnormalities in gastric electrophysiology on EGG in neonatal and pediatric patients.

The intestinal parasite Dientamoeba fragilis is a common colonizer of children in Denmark. Metronidazole has been used to reduce gastrointestinal symptoms in children colonized with D fragilis. We aimed to identify gut microbiota changes associated with D fragilis carrier status and metronidazole treatment of D fragilis-positive children.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are a heterogeneous group of conditions of unclear etiology. The biopsychosocial model approach to FGIDs posits that early-life stressors may trigger a cascade of complex interactions between genetic predisposition and risk factors eventually leading to the occurrence of FGIDs. The relationship between the psychological disposition of the mother and FGIDs occurrence is poorly understood. We conducted a study to investigate if parental psychological factors may contribute to the onset of FGIDs in offspring.

We generated national estimates of patient and hospitalization characteristics for pediatric inpatient admissions for foreign body ingestion (FBI) and compared these to admissions for other reasons. We further identified characteristics that were independently associated with length of stay (LOS). Finally, we hypothesized that endoscopy within 24 hours of admission was independently associated with a shorter LOS in patients admitted for FBI.

To investigate the effect of high fructose diet on ultrastructure and content of hepatic mitochondria, we randomized 6–8 weeks old male C57Bl6/J mice to ad lib chow or high-fat-high-fructose (HF2) diet for 32 weeks. HF2-fed mice gained more weight, had higher plasma alanine aminotransferase, and fasting glucose levels and increased hepatic triglyceride content at all time points compared to chow-fed mice. HF2-fed mice had lower mitochondrial to nuclear DNA ratio compared to chow-fed mice.
