Endotypes of intraoperative hypotension during major abdominal surgery: a retrospective machine learning analysis of an observational cohort study

Karim Kouz 1 , Lennart Brockmann 1 , Lea Malin Timmermann 1 , Alina Bergholz1 , Moritz Flick 1 , Kamal Maheshwari 2,3 , Daniel I. Sessler 2 , Linda Krause 4,y and Bernd Saugel

Volume 130, Issue 3, March 2023, Pages 253-261

Intraoperative hypotension is associated with myocardial injury, acute kidney injury, and death. In routine practice, specific causes of intraoperative hypotension are often unclear. A more detailed understanding of underlying haemodynamic alterations of intraoperative hypotension may identify specific treatments.

Epidemiological, methodological, and statistical characteristics of network meta-analysis in anaesthesia: a systematic review

Herman Sehmbi1, *, Susanne Retter 2 , Ushma J. Shah 1 , Derek Nguyen 3 , Janet Martin1,4 and Vishal Uppal

doi : 10.1016/j.bja.2022.08.042

Volume 130, Issue 3, March 2023, Pages 272-286

Network meta-analyses (NMAs) combine direct and indirect estimates to provide mixed (or network) estimates of effect sizes. The scientific rigour of the conduct and reporting of anaesthesia NMAs is unknown. This review assessed the epidemiological, methodological, and statistical characteristics of anaesthesia NMAs.

Volume 130, Issue 3, March 2023, Pages 314-321

Reducing perioperative anxiety and controlling pain in children are essential to optimise recovery and outcomes for both children and their parents. By acting on sensory and affective modulation of anxiety and pain, hypnosis is widely used in medical care, especially in anaesthesia. This randomised controlled clinical trial was designed to compare general anaesthesia and intraoperative hypnosis support for perioperative management of children undergoing superficial surgery.

Acute pain after surgery is common and often leads to chronic post-surgical pain, but neither treatment nor prevention is currently sufficient. We hypothesised that specific protein networks (protein-protein interactions) are relevant for pain after surgery in humans and mice.

Improving detectability of auditory interfaces for medical alarms through temporal variation in amplitude envelope

Liam Foley 1, *, Joseph J. Schlesinger 2 and Michael Schutz

doi : 10.1016/j.bja.2022.10.045

Volume 130, Issue 3, March 2023, Pages 351-359

Auditory interfaces play a vital role in many applications, informing users about both urgent and routine information critical to safety. Unfortunately, problems related to high alarm rates, low reliability, and sound annoyance create barriers to optimising the quality of patient care in perioperative medicine and critical care.

Ventilatory ratio (VR) has been proposed as an alternative approach to estimate physiological dead space. However, the absolute value of VR, at constant dead space, might be affected by venous admixture and CO2 volume expired per minute (VCO2).
