Many of our patients are athletes, and an ultimate goal is to help these athletes return to their preinjury level of activity or sport. Generally, we focus on patients’ injuries and treatments, but there are modifiable factors that can improve patient outcomes independent of surgical technique.

The goal of shoulder superior capsular reconstruction and/or anterior cable reconstructions, at least in terms of biomechanics, is to primarily restore a fulcrum to assist with pain control and functional optimization, with the secondary hope of maintaining cartilage.

Superior capsular reconstruction is a viable option for select patients with massive irreparable rotator cuff tears. Graft integrity at short- and mid-term follow-up directly correlates with range of motion, functional outcome, and radiographic outcome. Historically, various graft options have been proposed, including dermal allograft, fascia lata autograft, and synthetic graft choices.

It took a long time for meniscal root injuries to slowly gain scientific and clinical attention some 40 years after the first arthroscopic meniscal resection. Medial root injuries are mostly degenerative in nature and often are associated with obesity and varus deformity.

The critical consideration in determining the efficacy of hip surgery is patient-reported outcomes, specifically the achievement of the clinical threshold. Several studies examined the achievement of the clinical threshold following hip arthroscopy (HA) in the presence of coexisting lumbar spine disease.

Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is the gold standard procedure for patients with significant hip dysplasia. Hip arthroscopy is the gold standard procedure for repairing labral tears. In the past, open PAO procedures were performed without any concomitant labral repair surgery with successful outcomes.

Although the odds are extremely low, some baseball players are fortunate to make it to the professional ranks (minor or major league), where suffering an injury is common. During the 2011 to 2019 seasons, 112,405 injuries were reported in the Major League Baseball Health and Injury Tracking System database.
