Clinical and Radiological Outcomes of Arthroscopic Superior Capsular Reconstruction Versus Primary Rotator Cuff Repair in Massive Rotator Cuff Tears: A Propensity Score–Matched Study

Jun-Bum Lee, * MD, Erica Kholinne,y MD, PhD , Hui Ben,z MD, Sang-Pil So, * MD, Hood Alsaqri, * § MD, Hyun June Lee, * MD, Kyoung Hwan Koh, * MD, PhD , and In-Ho Jeon, * || MD, PhD

doi : 10.1177/03635465231171928

Arthroscopic superior capsular reconstruction (aSCR) has emerged as a treatment option for managing massive rotator cuff tears (MRCTs) given the unpredictable results after an arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (aRCR). Yet, few comparative studies of aSCR and aRCR have been conducted.

doi : 10.1177/03635465231175476

There is no practical consensus on managing cholesterol in patients with rotator cuff repair despite hyperlipidemia and statin therapy being well-known factors in rotator cuff healing. The 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk score is a commonly used guideline to determine statin administration for hyperlipidemia.

Association Between Supraspinatus Tendon Retraction, Histologic Myofiber Size, and Supraspinatus Muscle Atrophy on MRI

doi : 10.1177/03635465231173697

Atrophy of the rotator cuff is a negative prognostic indicator after rotator cuff repair. Although full-thickness rotator cuff tears accompanied by tendon retraction are commonly associated with decreased muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), it is unclear whether this is accompanied by histologic atrophy of rotator cuff myofibers.

Atypical Shoulder Instability Patterns in Adolescents Following Traumatic Anterior Shoulder Dislocation

Peter Cannamela, * MD, Holt Cutler, * MD, Garrett Sohn, * MD, Charles Wyatt,y MS, CPNP, Philip L. Wilson, *yz MD, and Henry B. Ellis,*y MD

doi : 10.1177/03635465231171129

Traumatic anterior shoulder instability is common in the adolescent athlete, and when it is untreated, the recurrence rate is high. Atypical lesions—such as anterior glenoid periosteal sleeve, humeral glenohumeral ligament, and insertional tendon avulsions—may occur within this population, and accurate diagnosis and appropriate lesion management are key to treatment success.

The healing capacity of the human glenoid labrum varies by tear location. Current evidence suggests that the healing capacity of meniscal and cartilage injuries relates to cellular composition and vascularity. However, little is known about the histological characteristics of the glenoid labrum and how they may affect healing potential in specific anatomic regions.

Vitamin C as a Potential Prophylactic Measure Against Frozen Shoulder in an In Vivo Shoulder Contracture Animal Model

Frozen shoulder is a common, painful, and movement-restricting condition. Although primary frozen shoulder is idiopathic, secondary frozen shoulder can occur after trauma or surgery. Prophylactic and therapeutic options are often unsatisfactory. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a potent physiological antioxidant and likely inhibits the activation of nuclear factor κB, which plays a decisive role in inflammatory reactions.

Tibial deflexion osteotomy (TDO) is sometimes indicated for revision anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in knees with posterior tibial slope (PTS) ≥12° and aims to decrease PTS to around 5°. When planning TDO, measuring the anterior tibial metaphyseal height (aHt) could help ascertain whether the available metaphyseal bone would be sufficient to create the wedge and leave adequate residual bone.

Ankle lateral ligament sprains are common injuries in sports, and some may result in persistent ankle pain and a feeling of instability without clinical evidence of instability. The anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) has 2 distinct fascicles, and recent publications have suggested that injury isolated to the superior fascicle might be the cause of these chronic symptoms. This study aimed to identify the biomechanical properties conferred by the fascicles in stabilizing the ankle in order to understand potential clinical problems that may follow when the fascicles are injured.
