Foods with high risk of Listeria contamination*
  • Improperly reheated hot dogs, luncheon meats, cold cuts, fermented or dry sausage, and other deli-style meat and poultry (heat to internal temperature of 74°C [165°F] or steaming hot)
  • Raw (unpasteurized) milk
  • Soft cheeses made with raw (unpasteurized) milk, such as feta, queso blanco, queso fresco, Brie, queso panela, Camembert, and blue-veined cheeses
  • Refrigerated smoked seafood
  • Store-made salads (such as ham salad, chicken salad, or seafood salads)
  • Refrigerated pate and meat spreads
  • Unwashed raw fruits and vegetables (skin should washed thoroughly in running tap water, even if it will be peeled or cut)
  • Raw or lightly cooked sprouts
* Emerging sources of Listeria monocytogenes contamination include frozen foods and ready-to-eat meals including salads. Pasteurized dairy products are also an emerging culprit.[4]
