The six cardinal positions of gaze

The six cardinal positions of gaze isolate the individual extraocular muscles (yoke muscles) for each cardinal position. In order to determine which muscle is moving abnormally, the six positions of gaze are observed to determine if the eye moves properly or improperly in each direction.
