This is an example of the American Academy of Pediatrics trigger tool for early recognition of children at risk for sepsis and septic shock. It is based upon the 2005 International Pediatric Consensus Conference criteria. These criteria remain helpful in the early recognition and treatment of children at risk for sepsis and septic shock and as components of institutional guidelines and protocols used to trigger clinician assessment and intervention. This early recognition is essential for prompt initiation of treatment to prevent progression along the spectrum from risk for sepsis to sepsis to septic shock and decrease mortality. For more, refer to UpToDate topics on recognition and initial management of children at risk for sepsis and septic shock.
