Kidney mass biopsy

Kidney mass biopsy
Kidney mass biopsy should be considered whenever it might influence counseling and management.
Kidney mass biopsy should be considered when a mass is suspected to be hematologic, metastatic, inflammatory, or infectious.
Kidney mass biopsy is not required for:
  1. Young/healthy patients who are unwilling to accept the potential uncertainties associated with a false-negative result on kidney mass biopsy and who will choose surgery even if the kidney mass biopsy is negative for cancer; or
  2. Older/frail patients who will be managed conservatively independent of kidney mass biopsy.
Counsel regarding rationale, positive/negative predictive values, potential risks, and nondiagnostic rates of kidney mass biopsy.
Multiple core biopsies are preferred over fine-needle aspiration.
