Overview of the anatomy of arginine vasopressin (AVP) production and release from the neurohypophysis

Hypothalamic cell bodies located in the paraventricular nuclei synthesize AVP. The axons of these AVP-producing neurons course through the pituitary stalk and the posterior pituitary, where the neuron terminals secrete AVP into the circulation.
