The shoulder joint is made up of the upper arm bone, collarbone, and shoulder blade. It is a "ball-and-socket" joint. For a total shoulder replacement, the doctor replaces both the ball and socket. For a reverse shoulder replacement, the doctor puts the "ball" on the shoulder blade and the "socket" on the upper arm bone. For a partial shoulder replacement, the doctor only replaces the ball.
