Lifestyle modifications and behavioral interventions for patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS)

Lifestyle modifications and behavioral interventions for patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS)
Lifestyle modifications
Limit fluid intake before bedtime or prior to travel
Limit intake of mild diuretics (eg, caffeine, alcohol)
Limit intake of bladder irritants (eg, highly seasoned or irritative foods)
Avoid constipation
Increase activity, including regular strenuous exercise
Maintain a healthy weight
Behavioral interventions to maximize bladder emptying
Timed voiding regimens Schedule urination "by the clock," eg, every 90 to 120 minutes during the daytime, regardless of perceived need to urinate
Double-voiding techniques Follow one urination with a second attempt at emptying (eg, "double void") within 1 to 2 minutes of the initial void
Pelvic floor muscle training Squeeze the muscles that control the flow of urine, including at the time of urinary urgency
Lifestyle modifications and behavioral interventions are first-line treatments for all patients with LUTS of any cause. These should also continue alongside pharmacotherapy or surgical management of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Please refer to related UpToDate content for additional detail.
