Collecting a catheter specimen of urine

Collecting a catheter specimen of urine

(A) Identify the sampling port on the tubing of the catheter drainage bag – urine should be obtained from this port.

(B) Clamp the catheter downstream from the port so that urine can collect above it in the tubing. Some catheter bags have an integral clamp.

(C) Swab the sampling port with an alcohol-impregnated swab to reduce the risk of contaminating the catheter or the specimen.

(D) Insert the syringe tip into the sampling port and withdraw urine following manufacturer's instructions.

(E) Place sample in the specimen container while ensuring that the syringe does not contact the container. Secure the lid to prevent leakage and contamination, then label the container, place it in a specimen bag, and seal the bag.

(F) If the sample is taken from a catheter valve, first clean the valve with an alcohol-impregnated swab to reduce the risk of cross contamination.

(G) Collect the urine in the specimen container while ensuring that the catheter does not contact the container. Secure the container lid to prevent leakage and contamination, then label the container, place it in a specimen bag, and seal the bag.
