For an electrophysiology, or "EP," study, the doctor makes a very small cut (incision) in the top inner part of the leg or just above the hand. They put a thin wire, called an "EP catheter," in a blood vessel just below the incision. Then, they move the catheter through the blood vessels to the heart to study electrical signals. They can also use the EP catheter to do "ablation." For this procedure, the catheter tip uses energy to destroy a small part of the heart that is creating or spreading abnormal signals.
