This table is to be used with UpToDate content on the treatment of allergic rhinitis, new-onset urticaria (hives), chronic spontaneous urticaria, and other allergic disorders. Standard dosing is used for treatment of allergic rhinitis and as initial dosing for urticaria. For those with allergic rhinitis, regular (daily) use is generally recommended; however, as-needed use may be sufficient for mild symptoms. Doses listed are for patients with normal kidney and liver function. Doses may need to be modified in kidney or hepatic impairment; refer to UpToDate Lexidrug monographs for details. Significant drug interactions may exist requiring dose adjustment or avoidance of some combinations; refer to the drug interactions program included within UpToDate to determine specific interactions.

IV: intravenous.

* Cetirizine and levocetirizine may be more sedating than others listed; they can be taken in the evening if sedating. Cetirizine is also available as an IV solution that may be useful in a health care setting when a rapid onset is needed or oral administration is not available.

¶ Also available as a single-pill combination with pseudoephedrine.

Δ Widely available in areas other than United States.
