Palpation of first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) sesamoid

Holding the toes in passive dorsiflexion often elicits pain in the setting of a sesamoid fracture. This position also allows for better palpation of the plantar region of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, including the sesamoids adjacent to the joint. In the photographs above, a marker was used to outline the approximate location of the sesamoids.
