- Musculoskeletal disease
- Psychiatric disease, with a focus on symptoms of depression and anxiety

Assess characteristics of the pain: - Associated findings
- Provocative and palliative factor
- Quality of pain
- Radiation of pain
- Setting in which pain occurs
- Temporal: Timing when the pain occurs and events that precede or trigger pain

Obtain psychosocial history, with particular focus on: - Substance use or abuse, including alcohol, marijuana, and prescription medication
- Patient safety: Does the patient have a current or past history of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse?

Ask about prior diagnostic tests or pain treatments |
Inquire about family history of relevant clinical conditions, such as chronic pain syndromes |
