¶ As presently constituted, most almond, rice, coconut, hemp, flax seed, and cashew "milks" are inappropriate replacements for cow's milk in toddlers and young children for whom milk remains an important part of the diet. Certain "unenriched" brands of nut beverages may actually have greater protein or fat content and fewer added ingredients including emulsifiers; however, they are also low in calcium and vitamin D. Milk substitute choices must be made on an individual basis. Careful assessment of the patient's diet and careful label reading of milk substitutes is vital when guiding families on specific and individual nutrient needs.
