This table provides the suggested needle size for arterial puncture and catheter size for arterial cannulation in children by site and weight. If a guidewire is used during the procedure, a 0.18 inch guidewire will pass through most 24-gauge catheters, though it may vary and a 0.14 inch wire may be necessary. For more detail regarding arterial line placement in children, refer to UpToDate content on arterial cannulation in children for pediatric emergency medicine and critical care.

Fr: French; IV: intravenous.

* Axillary or femoral artery catheterization may require a longer catheter compared with traditional IV catheters, particularly in larger patients; 1.5 to 2 cm of the catheter should be in the vessel after cannulation.
