Algorithm for pulmonary function test interpretation

Algorithm for pulmonary function test interpretation
This algorithm is meant for use in conjunction with UpToDate content on pulmonary function testing in adults. Pulmonary function testing interpretation is intended to classify physiologic impairments, which are more common in certain diseases. The clinical diagnoses indicated at the end of each branch are meant as potential examples of these physiologic derangements; a given diagnosis must also be confirmed clinically and/or using additional testing.

COPD: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; DLCO: diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide; FEV1: forced expiratory volume in one second; FVC: forced vital capacity; ILD: interstitial lung disease; VC: vital capacity.

* Bronchoprovocation testing uses a variety of challenges (eg, methacholine, mannitol, exercise, isocapnic hyperpnea) to assess airway hyperresponsiveness.

¶ Causes of high DLCO include increased hemoglobin and increased pulmonary vascular blood volume (eg, left-to-right shunt, asthma, and obesity).
